Musicianship Influences Language Effect on Musical Pitch Perception

William Choi

Summary: The research found an interactive effect of language and musicianship on musical pitch perception, but not on rhythmic perception. Cantonese language experience seemed to facilitate musical pitch perception, but only among non-musicians. Musicians did not show any perceptual advantage from Cantonese language experience.

Cantonese advantage on English stress perception: Constraints and neural underpinnings

William Choi

Summary: The study found that Cantonese listeners outperformed English listeners on English stress perception, but this advantage disappeared when segmental variations were introduced. Neurophysiologically, segmental variations diminished the P3b amplitudes of Cantonese but not English listeners.
