Trait Negative Affect Interacts With Ovarian Hormones to Predict Risk for Emotional Eating

Megan E. Mikhail et al.

Summary: Ovarian hormones significantly influence dysregulated eating in females, particularly when combined with high trait negative affect and certain hormonal environments. The risk of emotional eating is highest in women with high trait negative affect and low estradiol or high progesterone, especially those with a history of clinically significant binge-eating episodes. These findings suggest that affective and hormonal risk factors interact to promote emotional eating, with a heightened effect in women with clinically significant binge eating.

A Narrative Review of Sex Differences in Eating Disorders: Is There a Biological Basis?

Kristen M. Culbert et al.

Summary: Eating disorders and their core symptoms disproportionately affect females, with biological factors and hormonal influences playing important roles in the sex-differentiated prevalence and risk. Genetic effects and sex steroid hormones contribute to variations in eating pathology between males and females, with hormone-driven modulation of genetic influences and neural responsiveness to food-related cues potentially explaining within-sex variability in risk.

Summary: This study estimated the one-year costs of eating disorders in the United States, revealing a total economic cost of $64.7 billion and a reduced wellbeing value of $326.5 billion associated with eating disorders. The findings underscore the urgency of implementing effective policy actions to mitigate the impact of eating disorders.

Disorders of eating and body image during the menopausal transition: associations with menopausal stage and with menopausal symptomatology

Barbara Mangweth-Matzek et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that the menopausal transition may be a vulnerable period for eating disorders in women, especially with strong associations between menopausal symptoms and disordered eating behaviors and body image disturbances. Reported menopausal stage, which is challenging to define reliably, may be less informative than menopausal symptoms as a predictor of these issues.
