Efficient and Selective Interplay Revealed: CO2 Reduction to CO over ZrO2 by Light with Further Reduction to Methane over Ni0 by Heat Converted from Light

Hongwei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study elucidated the reaction mechanism of CO2 photoreduction into methane by monitoring the mass chromatogram, in situ FTIR spectroscopy, and in situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). It was found that using Ni-ZrO2 catalyst, methane was formed at a high rate under UV/Vis light at 96 kPa. FTIR and EXAFS identified species and mechanism involved in the reaction, paving the way for solar fuel generation using first row transition metals with only UV/Vis light.

Interfacial synergistic catalysis over Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in mesoporous ceria for CO2 methanation

Plaifa Hongmanorom et al.

Summary: An ordered mesoporous ceria, mpCeO(2), was synthesized using nanocasting, followed by strong electrostatic adsorption to prepare Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in mpCeO(2) for CO2 methanation. The Ni/mpCeO(2) catalyst showed significantly improved activity and selectivity compared to conventional CeO2-supported Ni catalyst, with the encapsulated structure and highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles playing key roles. Additionally, the mesoporous structure inhibited metal sintering, leading to excellent stability of the catalyst.

Comprehensive Study on Ni- or Ir-Based Alloy Catalysts in the Hydrogenation of Olefins and Mechanistic Insight

Jia-qi Bai et al.

Summary: Metal-alloyed atomic catalysts, such as the Ni-Ir/SiO2 catalyst, have shown high activity in hydrogenation reactions due to the presence of specific active sites like the Ni-Ir single atom in the alloy. Bimetallic catalysts composed of non-noble and noble metals exhibit significantly enhanced catalytic activity compared to monometallic counterparts, with specific combinations like Ni-IrSiO2 and Co-Ir/SiO2 being particularly effective. The hydrogenation mechanism over the Ni-Ir single atom involves electron transfers between Ni and Ir atoms, resulting in a low activation energy and improved catalytic performance.
