Increase in occurrence of large glacier-related landslides in the high mountains of Asia

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: Global warming is leading to the retreat of glaciers, which in turn triggers increased landslide activity in high mountain areas. Studies have shown an increase in large landslides in the Himalayan region over the past decade, which is associated with a decline in glacier area.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Romain Hugonnet et al.

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

Ecosystem response persists after a prolonged marine heatwave

Robert M. Suryan et al.

Summary: Established monitoring programs in the Gulf of Alaska following the Exxon Valdez oil spill over 30 years ago have been successful in assessing recovery from oil spill impacts and now provide valuable insights into ecosystem responses to marine heatwaves. The 2014-2016 northeast Pacific marine heatwave in the Gulf of Alaska led to abrupt changes across trophic levels, with responses persisting for at least 5 years. Anticipated increases in marine heatwaves under current climate projections suggest uncertainty about the Gulf of Alaska ecosystem returning to a pre-PMH state.
