Assessing the intra-crystalline approach to amino acid geochronology of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral)

Lucy J. Wheeler et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of isolating an 'intra-crystalline' fraction of proteins to improve the reliability of AA geochronology for foraminifera, focusing on Neogloboquadrina pachyderma. Results show the presence of a bleach-resistant fraction of biomineral proteins and suggest that the intra-crystalline fraction may behave as a closed system, particularly beneficial for younger samples. Material-specific regression equations successfully convert values between different analytical methods, enabling integration of geochronologies developed using different approaches.

Long-Term 13C Uptake by 12C-Enriched Calcite

Antoine Gehin et al.

Summary: This study explored the mechanism and rates of carbon isotope exchange between dissolved inorganic carbon and calcite minerals by equilibrating synthetic calcite particles in water with different temperatures. Results suggest that surface exchange and solid-phase diffusion of C-13 into the particles play a key role in the exchange process, with a potential effective diffusion constant at 21 degrees C. Additionally, fast exchange processes are possible, likely occurring through surface defects such as grain boundaries.
