Vertical transmission of coronavirus disease 2019: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Alexander M. Kotlyar et al.

Summary: The study found that 3.2% of 936 neonates from mothers with coronavirus disease 2019 tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 viral RNA using nasopharyngeal swab. The rates of infection are similar to those of other pathogens causing congenital infections but further research is needed to determine the rates of vertical transmission in early pregnancy and potential risk for fetal morbidity and mortality.

The authors emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in controlling disease progression.

Compromised SARS-CoV-2-specific placental antibody transfer

Caroline Atyeo et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 infection causes more severe disease in pregnant women compared to age-matched non-pregnant women. Transfer of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies across the placenta is significantly reduced compared to other infectious diseases like influenza and pertussis, but can be partially rescued by infection-induced increases in IgG and increased FCGR3A placental expression. These findings provide insights for maternal vaccine design to boost immunity in neonates.

Higher severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection rate in pregnant patients

Erica M. Lokken et al.

Summary: This study found that the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection rate in pregnant individuals was 70% higher than similarly aged adults in Washington State, especially among those from minority racial and ethnic groups and non-English language users in medical care. Pregnant women were not protected from infection in the early months of the pandemic, suggesting they should be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccine allocation.

Summary: Efficient transplacental transfer of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies supports the potential for maternally derived antibodies to provide neonatal protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This cohort study assesses the association between maternal and neonatal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-specific antibody concentrations.

Blood neutrophils from children with COVID-19 exhibit both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers

Vanesa Seery et al.

Summary: Neutrophils in children with COVID-19 exhibit a unique phenotype with high expression of inhibitory receptors and low expression of adhesion molecules, potentially preventing tissue infiltration. The expression of CD64 and serum IgG antibodies to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 can differentiate asymptomatic cases from mild and moderate cases of COVID-19.

Summary: The study showed that pregnant patients with COVID-19 had significantly higher hospitalization and case-fatality rates compared to similarly aged adults in Washington State. The hospitalization rate was 3.5 times higher than that of nonpregnant adults, and the COVID-19 case fatality rate in pregnancy was significantly elevated as well.
