Dietary fructose improves intestinal cell survival and nutrient absorption

Samuel R. Taylor et al.

Summary: Fructose consumption is linked to the increasing rates of obesity and cancer globally. Dietary fructose metabolism occurs in the small intestine, where it is transported and phosphorylated to form fructose 1-phosphate, which accumulates in the cell. The ability of fructose to promote cell survival and increase intestinal villus length expands the surface area of the gut and enhances nutrient absorption and adiposity.
