SARS-CoV-2 infection in cats and dogs in infected mink farms

Anna E. van Aart et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in 12 feral cats and 2 dogs from 10 infected mink farms. The research also shows that mink-to-cat transmission could occur at a rate of approximately 12%, while the origin of infections in dogs remains inconclusive. Interspecies transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly mink-to-cat transmission, should be considered as a potential risk for spread of the virus.

SARS-CoV-2 in Danish Mink Farms: Course of the Epidemic and a Descriptive Analysis of the Outbreaks in 2020

Anette Boklund et al.

Summary: Since 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has become a global pandemic, spreading to mink farms in the Netherlands and Denmark, where infected mink can easily transmit the virus within farms and to humans through close contact. The virus was detected in various samples from infected farms, showcasing the susceptibility of mink to SARS-CoV-2, but the exact routes of transmission between farms remain unclear, with direct human contact still being the primary mode of transmission.

Identification of SARS-CoV-2 spike mutations that attenuate monoclonal and serum antibody neutralization

Zhuoming Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that antibodies targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein have escape mutations, different monoclonal antibodies have unique resistance profiles, some mutants are resistant to multiple antibodies while some variants can escape neutralization by convalescent sera. Comparing antibody-mediated mutations with circulating SARS-CoV-2 sequences revealed substitutions that may weaken neutralizing immune responses in some individuals, warranting further investigation.

Preliminary report of an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in mink and mink farmers associated with community spread, Denmark, June to November 2020

Helle Daugaard Larsen et al.

Summary: During June-November 2020, SARS-CoV-2-infected mink were found in 290 out of 1,147 Danish mink farms. In North Denmark Region, 30% of individuals associated with mink farms tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and approximately 27% of SARS-CoV-2 strains in the community were linked to mink. Despite measures taken, the virus spread was not effectively controlled, leading to the government ordering the culling of all Danish mink as they pose a potential virus reservoir that challenges pandemic control.

The SARS-CoV-2 Y453F mink variant displays a pronounced increase in ACE-2 affinity but does not challenge antibody neutralization

Rafael Bayarri-Olmos et al.

Summary: A new variant discovered in minks has shown enhanced transmission capacity but does not affect immunity in previously infected individuals or vaccine models. The rise in frequency of this variant in mink farms may be due to a fitness advantage conferred by receptor adaptation rather than evading immune responses.

Summary: This study in Spain discovered evidence of household pet ferrets being exposed to SARS-CoV-2, with two out of 127 ferrets tested positive for the virus. This suggests that pet ferrets may also be susceptible to infection.

The evolutionary dynamics of endemic human coronaviruses

Wendy K. Jo et al.

Summary: Community protective immunity can impact the evolution of RNA viruses by selecting for new antigenic variants over years, such as the annual evaluation of influenza vaccines. The extent of antigenic drift affecting coronaviruses remains unknown, but similarities in evolutionary dynamics between HCoV and IAV suggest potential similarities in future evolutionary patterns of SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: COVID-19 is a significant pandemic likely of animal origin, with mink being highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The detection of SARS-CoV-2 in feral American mink in Eastern Spain suggests potential transmission pathways between fur farms and wild mink.

SARS-CoV-2 spike L452R variant evades cellular immunity and increases infectivity

Acquisition of the L452R Mutation in the ACE2-Binding Interface of Spike Protein Triggers Recent Massive Expansion of SARS-CoV-2 Variants

Veronika Tchesnokova et al.

Summary: A recent global expansion of various independent SARS-CoV-2 variants with mutation L452R in the spike protein's receptor-binding domain has been reported. The emergence of these variants, including epsilon, delta, kappa, iota, and lambda, has been associated with increased viral transmissibility, infectivity, and pathogenicity due to the L452R mutation near the ACE2 interaction interface.

Occupational and environmental exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in and around infected mink farms

Myrna M. T. de Rooij et al.

Summary: Infected mink farms were found to have high levels of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the airborne dust, with most settling dust samples testing positive for the virus. Samples from minks' housing units and surfaces also showed the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Outdoor air dispersion of the virus was limited, with negligible risk of environmental exposure to nearby communities.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 on mink farms between humans and mink and back to humans

Bas B. Oude Munnink et al.

Summary: Animal experiments have shown that various animals can be infected by SARS-CoV-2, with evidence of animal-to-human transmission within mink farms. Investigation into mink farm outbreaks revealed that the virus was initially introduced by humans and has since evolved, causing transmission between mink farms. Despite enhanced biosecurity measures and culling, transmission occurred between farms in three large clusters with unknown modes of transmission, resulting in a high percentage of infections among mink farm residents and employees.
