Oxygen sensing in crustaceans: functions and mechanisms

Tabata Martins de Lima et al.

Summary: Animals living in changing environments must adjust their metabolism to ensure body functions, with nematodes and insects known to use atypical sGCs as oxygen sensors and respond through downstream cGMP pathways, while crustaceans' mechanisms for sensing oxygen levels are less understood. By analyzing crustacean transcriptomes using the guidance from nematodes and insects, researchers identified orthologues of atypical sGCs, HIFs, and PHs in crustaceans, offering potential directions for future research on oxygen sensing by crustaceans.

Effects of melatonin feed on the changes of hemolymph immune parameters, antioxidant capacity, and mitochondrial functions in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) caused by acute hypoxia

Summary: Hypoxia stress can lead to immune damage, reduced antioxidant capacity, and changes in mitochondrial function of hemocytes in E. sinensis. Feeding melatonin diet can improve anti-hypoxia ability and protect the immune system to some extent.

Emersion behavior of the semi-terrestrial crab Neohelice granulata during hypoxic conditions: Lactate as a trigger

Tabata Martins de Lima et al.

Summary: Climate changes are causing aquatic environments to change, leading animals to use different behavioral and physiological strategies. In the study on the semi-terrestrial crab Neohelice granulata, it was found that the crabs increased emersion behavior in severe hypoxia, but still needed anaerobic pathways to meet their metabolic demand. Additionally, an increase in hemolymphatic lactate levels may act as a trigger for the increase in emersion behavior in these crabs.

Mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase knock-down increases oxidative stress and caspase-3 activity in the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei exposed to high temperature, hypoxia, and reoxygenation

Ricardo Gonzalez-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Shrimp exposed to climate change-related factors such as high temperature, hypoxia, and reoxygenation may experience oxidative stress and apoptosis. The study demonstrates the crucial role of mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (mMnSOD) in preventing oxidative damage and apoptosis, while also exacerbating oxidative stress in some instances. Overall, these findings highlight the intricate response of shrimp to environmental stressors derived from climate change.

Effects of body size and lung type on desiccation resistance, hypoxia tolerance and thermal preference in two terrestrial isopods species

Andrzej Anto et al.

Summary: The study suggests that terrestrial isopods have evolved a trade-off between water retention and gas exchange, influenced by species differences and body size effects. By comparing Porcellio scaber and Oniscus asellus, it was found that species identity and body size significantly affect tolerance to hypoxia and low humidity.
