Implications of the 2018 Canadian Cannabis Act: Should regulation differ for medicinal and non-medicinal cannabis use?

Chelsea Cox

Summary: The regulatory framework for medical cannabis access in Canada has been established since 2001, with a growing number of patients seeking access over the years. The enactment of the Cannabis Act in October 2018 introduced two mechanisms for accessing cannabis in Canada - one for medical use and the other for non-medical use. While a single framework could streamline processes and simplify regulations, concerns have been raised regarding insurance coverage, control mechanisms, market incentives, and patient obligations if the medical access framework is dissolved.
