Proximate and ultimate causes of the bactericidal action of antibiotics

Fernando Baquero et al.

Summary: While we have a good understanding of the proximate mechanisms of antibiotics, the ultimate mechanisms by which antibiotics kill bacteria remain unclear and subject to further debate and exploration.

Variability of plasmid fitness effects contributes to plasmid persistence in bacterial communities

Aida Alonso-del Valle et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the fitness effects of plasmid pOXA-48_K8 on wild-type bacterial hosts are largely unknown, showing a varying impact across different bacterial isolates. Genomic results also suggest a link between plasmid fitness effects and bacterial phylogeny. Furthermore, incorporating fitness results into a population dynamics model provides new insights into conditions for plasmid stability in bacterial communities.

The evolution of strategy in bacterial warfare via the regulation of bacteriocins and antibiotics

Rene Niehus et al.

Summary: Bacteria use a variety of compounds to inhibit and kill each other, and through evolution, bacteria can gain advantages by regulating toxin production, especially by increasing toxin production in response to competitors' toxins. Reciprocation in bacterial warfare serves to enable efficient and effective attacks, providing a fundamental advantage to reciprocation.
