A review of micronutrient deficiencies and analysis of maize contribution to nutrient requirements of women and children in Eastern and Southern Africa

Y. J. H. Galani et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the importance of maize as staple food in Eastern and Southern Africa and its connection to micronutrient deficiencies in these regions. Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among women and children, are prevalent in these regions. Maize consumption in these regions is also high. While maize can contribute to meeting dietary reference intakes, it lacks certain nutrients such as fats, calcium, and zinc. Successful strategies to address micronutrient deficiencies in these regions include maize fortification, increasing dietary diversity, and biofortification.

Quantitative evaluation of the grain zinc in cereal crops caused by phosphorus fertilization. A meta-analysis

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The application of phosphorus (P) can decrease zinc (Zn) concentration in grains, particularly in wheat and maize. While P application does not impact the availability of Zn in soil, it does significantly reduce root Zn concentration in plants, which is associated with a decrease in colonization of roots by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Plant Available Zinc Is Influenced by Landscape Position in the Amhara Region, Ethiopia

Mesfin K. Desta et al.

Summary: This study characterized the plant available zinc at different landscape positions by conducting adsorption-desorption studies on soil samples collected from on-farm trials in Ethiopia. The amount of adsorption and desorption was found to be highly associated with soil pH, organic carbon concentration, and cation exchange capacity, with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models fitting well to the data. Multiple regression models were developed to inform zinc fertilizer management strategies for improving plant zinc use efficiency in different locations and landscape positions in the region.

Effect of Foliar Micronutrients (B, Mn, Fe, Zn) on Maize Grain Yield, Micronutrient Recovery, Uptake, and Partitioning

Zachary P. Stewart et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of foliar micronutrient application at different rates and growth stages on maize grain yield, finding that foliar B, Mn, Zn, and Fe/Zn had minimal impact on grain yield, while foliar Fe consistently increased yield. Most micronutrients showed limited translocation, but early application of B had significant mobilization to reproductive tissues. The Fe/Zn mix had a suppressive effect on yield.

Application of K and Zn Influences the Mineral Accumulation More in Hybrid Than Inbred Maize Cultivars

Hafiz Muhammad Ali Raza et al.

Summary: This study investigated the optimal concentrations of potassium (K) and zinc (Zn) in different hybrid and inbred maize cultivars and found that combined fertilization approach (Zn12K60) significantly improved the plant biometric and physiological attributes of maize crops. Maize hybrids showed better performance compared to inbred cultivars under the combined application of Zn and K (Zn12K60), indicating their suitability for fodder production in Zn deficient soils.

The nutritional quality of cereals varies geospatially in Ethiopia and Malawi

D. Gashu et al.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread among people in sub-Saharan Africa due to limited access to micronutrient-rich food sources. Research in Ethiopia and Malawi shows geographical variation in the micronutrient composition of staple cereal grains, influenced by soil and environmental factors. Understanding these geographical effects is crucial for designing interventions to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies.

Combining P and Zn fertilization to enhance yield and grain quality in maize grown on Mediterranean soils

Antonio Rafael Sanchez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The joint application of phosphorus and zinc promoted the translocation of these nutrients to grains, significantly increasing aboveground dry matter and grain zinc content in maize plants grown on Mediterranean soils. On the other hand, individual application of phosphorus or zinc might reduce aboveground dry matter and yield at harvest, leading to changes in grain quality-related proteins.
