The development of natural and designed protein nanocages for encapsulation and delivery of active compounds

Hai Chen et al.

Summary: Protein nanocages are three-dimensional shell-like containers assembled from multiple subunits in high symmetry, with a homogeneous chamber segregated by protein walls. They are increasingly being explored as nano-vehicles for encapsulating active compounds or drugs to enhance their properties and bioavailability. Various strategies for molecular encapsulation within protein nanocages have been summarized, with a focus on the encapsulation and delivery of food bioactive compounds. Despite challenges such as low yields and high costs, further research is necessary for the development of protein nanocages as novel nano-vehicles for food active compounds.

In Vitro Gastrointestinal Stability of Lipophilic Polyphenols is Dependent on their Oil-Water Partitioning in Emulsions: Studies on Curcumin, Resveratrol, and Quercetin

Hualu Zhou et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of lipophilic polyphenols is often hindered by poor solubility and stability in the human gut. Encapsulating these polyphenols within digestible lipid droplets can enhance their solubility and stability. Different polyphenols, such as quercetin, curcumin, and resveratrol, exhibit varying levels of chemical stability and solubility under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, which can be attributed to factors like pH-dependent charge and logD values. Understanding these factors is crucial for designing nanoemulsion-based delivery systems to improve the efficacy of lipophilic polyphenols.

Therapeutic potential of AMPK signaling targeting in lung cancer: Advances, challenges and future prospects

Milad Ashrafizadeh et al.

Summary: Lung cancer is a major cause of death worldwide, with various risk factors such as genetics, epigenetics, and environmental factors playing a role in its development. The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway is crucial in lung cancer progression, influencing metastasis, proliferation, and response to treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. AMPK activation can both enhance and suppress lung cancer progression, indicating its complex and dual role in cancer cells.
