Aerator energy use in shrimp farming and means for improvement

Claude E. Boyd et al.

Summary: The text highlights the range of aeration energy use in shrimp farming and opportunities for reducing energy consumption, such as maximizing aeration capacity, adjusting aeration duration, and monitoring dissolved oxygen concentration. It also suggests replacing inefficient farm-made aerators with factory-made ones and redesigning aerators for improved efficiency.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

A Cursory Look at the Fishmeal/Oil Industry From an Ecosystem Perspective

Lynne Shannon et al.

Summary: This article discusses the potential competition between the fishmeal industry and marine predators, as well as the implications of taking away forage fish from the sea to support agriculture. It also explores the idea of more sustainable alternatives to fishmeal and the role of the fishing industry in developing these alternatives.

Resource use in whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei farming in Ecuador

Claude E. Boyd et al.

Summary: A survey of 101 shrimp farms in Ecuador showed that the average annual shrimp yield per production pond water surface area was 7.03 +/- 0.93 (SE) t/ha/year. The study also revealed average land, water, energy, and wild fish use per ton of shrimp produced. Notably, a quarter of land use was for feed, and nearly 80% of total water usage was attributed to water exchange practices. Major direct energy uses at the farms included water pumping and mechanical aeration.

Resource sharing and resource sparing, understanding the role of production intensity and farm practices in resource use in shrimp aquaculture

Robert P. Davis et al.

Summary: Aquaculture production is a significant part of global food supply, with recent studies suggesting that intensifying shrimp aquaculture could save resources on a per tonne basis. By analyzing production parameters such as feed type and water exchange rate, the study found that land and water use have an asymptotic relationship with production intensity, with water exchange rate being the most important factor in water use and production intensity in land use. Energy use was highest with diets containing fish meal as a protein source, indicating the potential for resource savings with increased production intensities.

Nutritional evaluation of some economically important marine and freshwater mollusc species of Bangladesh

Mohammad Moniruzzaman et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the nutritional value of 7 economically important mollusc species in Bangladesh, finding higher protein in marine bivalves and higher carbohydrates in freshwater bivalves. Amino acid and fatty acid contents were higher in marine bivalves, while omega-3 fatty acids were more abundant in marine oysters, clams, and cockles.

Food Loss and Waste in Meat Sector-Why the Consumption Stage Generates the Most Losses?

Malgorzata Karwowska et al.

Summary: Food loss and waste in the meat sector is a current, widespread, and serious problem that mainly occurs at the consumption level. Data shows that up to 23% of food is wasted in the entire meat sector. It is important to reduce this waste for economic and environmental reasons, as it can improve efficiency within businesses, help those in need of food, and reduce environmental impacts.
