Longitudinal changes of spinal cord grey and white matter following spinal cord injury

Gergely David et al.

Summary: Traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injuries result in neurodegeneration throughout the entire neuraxis. Research on the spatiotemporal dynamics of grey and white matter neurodegeneration above and below the injury is lacking. This study found that grey matter atrophy lagged behind white matter neurodegeneration above the injury, while the processes progressed in parallel in the lumbar enlargement below the injury. Tracking tissue-specific neurodegeneration trajectories can be valuable for monitoring recovery and treatment effects.
