Corticostriatal dysfunction and social interaction deficits in mice lacking the cystine/glutamate antiporter

Eduard Bentea et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the lack of the specific subunit xCT of the system x(c)(-) in xCT(-/-) mice leads to decreased corticostriatal neurotransmission, possibly due to reduced extracellular glutamate availability rather than morphological or structural abnormalities. Additionally, the xCT(-/-) mice exhibited decreased intracellular glutamate density, aberrant presynaptic protein expression, and altered kinase network signaling in the striatum, potentially contributing to changes in postsynaptic responses and behavioral phenotypes indicative of autism spectrum disorder.

MECOM permits pancreatic acinar cell dedifferentiation avoiding cell death under stress conditions

Elyne Backx et al.

Summary: This study transcriptionally profiled the two major human pancreatic exocrine cell types, acinar and duct cells, during experimental stress conditions. The results showed that in dedifferentiated acinar cells, cancer pathways are upregulated in which MECOM is a critical regulator that suppresses acinar cell death by permitting cellular dedifferentiation.

Glutamate transporters: Critical components of glutamatergic transmission

Ada G. Rodriguez-Campuzano et al.

Summary: Glutamate is a major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and its dysregulation can lead to excitotoxicity and neuronal death. Glutamate transporters play a crucial role in maintaining low extracellular glutamate levels through various regulatory mechanisms such as transcriptional, translational, protein trafficking, and post-translational modifications. Understanding these mechanisms is essential in shaping our current knowledge of glutamate actions in the nervous system.

The postnatal GABA shift: A developmental perspective

Carlijn Peerboom et al.

Summary: The transition from depolarizing to hyperpolarizing GABA signaling during postnatal development is crucial for brain function and associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Each developmental shift in GABA function regulates different aspects of neuron development, ensuring alignment with the developing network environment. Proper timing of the postnatal GABA shift may be influenced by sensory input and a developmental perspective is needed to understand the consequences of mismatches in connectivity, activity, and GABA signaling during brain development.
