The effect of the GoodSAM volunteer first-responder app on survival to hospital discharge following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Christopher M. Smith et al.

Summary: The GoodSAM mobile application, by alerting volunteer first-responders, can improve bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients, leading to increased survival rates. The study found that although the alert acceptance rates were low, they had a positive impact on patient survival to hospital discharge.

Outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Tommaso Scquizzato et al.

Summary: The study revealed that out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection had lower survival rates and return of spontaneous circulation, with more occurrences of cardiac arrest at home and nonshockable rhythms. However, the rates of bystander-initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation were similar.

Crowdsourcing to save lives: A scoping review of bystander alert technologies for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Ailish Valeriano et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of crowdsourcing technologies for bystander intervention in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. A total of 65 articles from more than 15 countries were included, covering 25 unique technologies, predominantly using text message-based systems or mobile phone applications. These technologies typically utilize global positioning systems to direct bystanders to victims and nearby AEDs, with key barriers including false positive alerts, legal liability, and potential psychological impact on volunteers.

Prehospital identification of Covid-19: an observational study

Douglas Spangler et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the prehospital presentation of Covid-19 patients in a Swedish care system, and evaluated the predictive value of Covid-19 suspicion documented by dispatch and ambulance nurses. The findings suggest that while prehospital suspicion is indicative of hospital-confirmed Covid-19, it should not be relied upon as the sole factor for ruling out the need for isolation precautions. The data provided can be used to develop better guidelines for identifying Covid-19 patients in the prehospital setting.

Summary: Activating volunteer citizens in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has the potential to improve survival rates through increased bystander CPR and early defibrillation. Despite limited evidence of their effectiveness, citizen responder systems are widely used in many countries.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac arrest systems of care

Christopher P. Kovach et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had negative impacts on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) epidemiology and systems of care, leading to increased incidence of OHCA, lower rates of successful resuscitation, and increased mortality. It has also significantly impacted patient outcomes, access to care, emergency medical response, hospital-based healthcare systems, and policies.

Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 on Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Survival Rate: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Magdalena J. Borkowska et al.

Summary: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) poses a challenge for medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Suspected or diagnosed COVID-19 patients have a lower survival rate following OHCA compared to non-COVID-19 patients, potentially due to a lower incidence of shockable rhythms in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) incidence globally, posing challenges to the safety of emergency medical service personnel and healthcare providers. The lack of unified safety protocols has led to the development of different resuscitation approaches worldwide.

Rachael T. Fothergill et al.

Summary: During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in London, there was a significant increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) incidence, accompanied by a dramatic reduction in survival rates. The number of OHCA incidents showed a strong correlation with the daily number of COVID-19 cases.

Management of first responder programmes for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest during the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe

Linn Andelius et al.

Summary: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, most regions in Europe adjusted the management of FR programmes. The majority either implemented restrictions or temporarily paused the programmes, with common measures including omission of rescue breaths for citizen responders and provision of personal protective equipment for professional FRs. Further studies are needed to explore the impact of these changes on bystander CPR and AED use, as well as patient outcomes.

European first responder systems and differences in return of spontaneous circulation and survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A study of registry cohorts

Summary: The presence of a dispatched First Responder (FR) system in European regions may be associated with higher rates of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and survival for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. Regions with FR systems showed significantly higher ROSC and survival rates compared to regions without, indicating the importance of having FR systems for improving outcomes of OHCA patients.
