An experimental study of mitigating coastal sand dune erosion by microbial- and enzymatic-induced carbonate precipitation

Kai-Wei Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated novel bio-mediated methods (MICP and EICP) for mitigating sand dune erosion under wave attack. Both methods were effective at mild-to-moderate conditions but less effective under adverse conditions due to different spatial distribution patterns of calcite precipitation.

One-phase-low-pH enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) method for soil improvement

Ming-Juan Cui et al.

Summary: Enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) is a new method for soil improvement using free urease enzyme. It is considered more advantageous in terms of bio-safety compared to microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), but less efficient in calcium carbonate production. A high efficiency EICP method proposed in this paper involves a one-phase injection of low pH solution, resulting in significantly improved calcium conversion efficiency and distribution uniformity compared to the conventional two-phase EICP method.

Bio-mediated calcium carbonate precipitation and its effect on the shear behaviour of calcareous sand

Ming-Juan Cui et al.

Summary: Calcareous sands, with abundant intraparticle pores, are prone to particle breakage, leading to poor engineering properties. However, bio-cementation can effectively improve the shear strength by filling pores with precipitated calcium carbonate. The strength enhancement of bio-cemented calcareous sand is lower compared to silica sand, possibly due to differences in soil skeleton strength and interparticle pore-filling of calcium carbonate.
