Equine Influenza

Thomas M. Chambers

Summary: This article introduces the upper respiratory diseases in horses caused by influenza A virus, discussing the genetic evolution and potential for interspecies transmission of equine influenza viruses, as well as their clinical features and epidemiology. Vaccination is considered crucial for controlling equine influenza.

Canine and Feline Influenza

Brian R. Wasik et al.

Summary: Influenza virus infections have been observed in domestic carnivores, particularly in dogs and cats, with spillovers from avian, human, or swine viruses. The impacts of these infections on veterinary and human health raise important questions regarding their zoonotic or panzootic potential.

Bat influenza vectored NS1-truncated live vaccine protects pigs against heterologous virus challenge

Jinhwa Lee et al.

Summary: Swine influenza is a significant disease for the swine industry, and traditional whole inactivated virus vaccines may cause vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease, while live attenuated influenza virus vaccines can effectively protect pigs from both homologous and heterologous virus infections. In this study, a chimeric bat influenza virus was used to develop a safe live vaccine to prevent swine influenza.

Mink is a highly susceptible host species to circulating human and avian influenza viruses

Honglei Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that farmed minks are commonly infected with both human and avian influenza viruses. Human influenza viruses may be transmitted from humans to minks, while avian influenza viruses may be transmitted through feed to farmed minks. Therefore, feeding minks with raw poultry by-products should be prohibited to reduce the risk of novel pandemic virus emergence.

Equine Influenza Virus and Vaccines

Fatai S. Oladunni et al.

Summary: Equine influenza virus (EIV) is a constantly evolving viral pathogen responsible for yearly outbreaks of respiratory disease in horses. The virus can evade host protective immunity, making it a successful pathogen. Despite vaccination, the protective effects decay over time, allowing for continued transmission.

Co-circulation of multiple influenza A reassortants in swine harboring genes from seasonal human and swine influenza viruses

Pia Ryt-Hansen et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of swIAV surveillance in Danish swine from 2011 to 2018, revealing multiple different circulating genotypes of the virus, including novel reassortants with human seasonal IAV gene segments. The phylogenetic analysis showed genetic drift in antigenic sites of the hemagglutinin protein and identified a swine divergent cluster among the viruses studied.

Clinical evidence that the pandemic from 1889 to 1891 commonly called the Russian flu might have been an earlier coronavirus pandemic

Harald Brussow et al.

Summary: Medical reports from late 19th century Britain and Germany on patients with the 1889-1891 Russian flu show similarities with COVID-19, such as multisystem affections, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological symptoms, and a protracted recovery. Mortality was higher in elderly subjects, while children were less affected. Trans-species infection between pet animals or horses and humans was also noted, possibly linked to a broad host range bovine coronavirus around 1890.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 on mink farms between humans and mink and back to humans

Bas B. Oude Munnink et al.

Summary: Animal experiments have shown that various animals can be infected by SARS-CoV-2, with evidence of animal-to-human transmission within mink farms. Investigation into mink farm outbreaks revealed that the virus was initially introduced by humans and has since evolved, causing transmission between mink farms. Despite enhanced biosecurity measures and culling, transmission occurred between farms in three large clusters with unknown modes of transmission, resulting in a high percentage of infections among mink farm residents and employees.

Detection and Characterization of Swine Origin Influenza A(H1N1) Pandemic 2009 Viruses in Humans following Zoonotic Transmission

Peter W. Cook et al.

Summary: The study discusses the transmission of seasonal influenza viruses between humans and pigs, leading to sustained circulation of human-like viruses in the U.S. swine population. Two cases of human infections with A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses originating from swine hosts are identified and classified as swine-origin variant influenza viruses. The study underscores the importance of developing techniques for distinguishing human-origin and swine-origin viruses for continued surveillance of influenza viruses.
