The influence of temperature, humidity, and simulated sunlight on the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in aerosols

Paul Dabisch et al.

Summary: This study found that temperature, simulated sunlight, and humidity are significant factors influencing the persistence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in aerosols, with sunlight and temperature having a greater impact than humidity. The time needed for a 90% decrease in infectious virus varied from minutes to hours depending on environmental conditions, suggesting that the virus could remain infectious for extended periods under certain conditions.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA on public surfaces in a densely populated urban area of Brazil: A potential tool for monitoring the circulation of infected patients

Jonatas Santos Abrahao et al.

Summary: The world is currently facing the worst global health crisis since December 2019, with over 30 million cases and 950 thousand deaths due to the COVID-19 disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. A study in a densely populated urban area in Brazil found SARS-CoV-2 RNA contamination on public surfaces, indicating the need for continuous monitoring and measures to address the risk.

SARS-CoV-2 viability under different meteorological conditions, surfaces, fluids and transmission between animals

Maria Fernandez-Raga et al.

Summary: Since the COVID-19 outbreak, researchers have been actively studying the novel coronavirus to understand its transmission mechanisms and prevent further spread. However, due to the novelty of the virus, information on its behavior in different environments is limited. Further research is needed to increase understanding of the virus.

Outdoor Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and Other Respiratory Viruses: A Systematic Review

Tommaso Celeste Bulfone et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that only a small proportion of global SARS-CoV-2 infections have occurred outdoors, with indoor transmission being more likely compared to outdoor transmission. There is considerable heterogeneity in study quality and definitions of outdoor settings, which limits the ability to draw definitive conclusions about outdoor transmission risks.

The detection of SRAS-CoV-2 in outpatient clinics and public facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic

Hossein M. Elbadawy et al.

Summary: Studies have confirmed that surfaces and objects in hospitals, isolation rooms, outpatient clinics, and public facilities can be contaminated with SARS-CoV-2. Attention is needed to decontaminate frequently touched surfaces in healthcare facilities and public spaces to reduce the risk of transmission.

Investigating SARS-CoV-2 persistent contamination in different indoor environments

He Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be detected in room-temperature environments at least 57 days after exposure, much longer than previously reported. Additionally, infectious SARS-CoV-2 could exist for at least 60 days on the surface of cold-chain food packages. Doorknobs and toilets were identified as important areas in COVID-19 control. High-risk populations involved in cold-chain logistics operations, such as porters, require strict prevention measures and high-level personal protection.

Toilets dominate environmental detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in a hospital

Zhen Ding et al.

Summary: Respiratory and fecal aerosols have confirmed and suspected roles in transmitting SARS-CoV-2, with fecal-derived aerosols in patients' toilets containing most of the detected virus. Surface and hand hygiene are crucial for intervention to prevent transmission.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the air of public places and transportation

Mostafa Hadei et al.

Summary: The study found that SARS-CoV-2 was present in public places and transportation vehicles in Tehran. Factors positively associated with the presence of SARS-CoV-2 included the number of people present during sampling and the sampled air volume, while factors negatively associated included the percentage of people with masks, air temperature, and sampling site volume. Preventive strategies should focus on reducing indoor crowding, enhancing disinfection of transport vehicles, and promoting mask-wearing.

Epidemiological, socio-demographic and clinical features of the early phase of the COVID-19 epidemic in Ecuador

Esteban Ortiz-Prado et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the early epidemiological trends of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador, highlighting the higher mortality rates among unemployed individuals and the strong association between poverty and mortality. Important determinants of mortality identified include the presence of comorbidities, male gender, and age above 65. Coastal regions in Ecuador had higher mortality rates compared to highlands.

Longitudinal Monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 RNA on High-Touch Surfaces in a Community Setting

Abigail P. Harvey et al.

Summary: Environmental surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 on high-touch surfaces in a community setting during a COVID-19 outbreak revealed a low risk of infection from contaminated surfaces. The percentage of positive samples from high-touch surfaces predicted variations in COVID-19 cases at the city-level with a 7-day lead time, suggesting that this surveillance method could serve as an early warning tool for monitoring case trends.

Tracing surface and airborne SARS-CoV-2 RNA inside public buses and subway trains

Teresa Moreno et al.

Summary: A study on public transport in Barcelona during the summer of 2020 found traces of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in surface and air samples, with more viral remnants on bus surfaces compared to trains. Although signs of viral RNA were detected, they were considered unlikely to be infectious. Vigilant attention to ventilation systems and regular disinfection of vehicles are necessary to effectively eliminate viral traces, especially during peak COVID-19 periods.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA on playground surfaces and water fountains

Eran Kozer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in environmental samples collected at public playgrounds and water fountains in a country with high disease prevalence. The results showed that a small percentage of samples tested positive for the virus, highlighting the importance of maintaining environmental and personal hygiene in urban settings.

SARS Wars: the Fomites Strike Back

Emanuel Goldman

Summary: Debate continues about the significance of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2, with studies showing virus survival on surfaces not necessarily reflecting real-life conditions. Despite frequent presence of viral RNA on surfaces, tests for infectious virus are largely negative, even in hospitals with COVID-19 patients. Fomite transmission is likely a very minor component of the pandemic.

Swabbing the Urban Environment - A Pipeline for Sampling and Detection of SARS-CoV-2 From Environmental Reservoirs

Maria Rojas et al.

Summary: To control the community transmission of COVID-19 during the 2020 global pandemic, countries implemented strategies based on human testing, face covering, and surface disinfection. Citizens were enlisted to investigate the presence of the virus on rarely cleaned urban surfaces, collecting a total of 4,080 samples. The methods used were sensitive and resistant to inhibitors commonly found in environmental samples, successful in engaging citizen scientists for future virus surveillance.
