H5 Influenza Viruses in Egypt

Rabeh El-Shesheny et al.

Summary: Egypt has been an endemic for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) viruses for almost a decade, causing significant impact on poultry production and human infections. Since 2017, HPAI A(H5N8) viruses have gradually replaced A(H5N1) viruses, but the government's outbreak control measures have been inadequate, resulting in an increase in avian influenza outbreaks and low compliance with control measures in the community.

T Cell Immunity against Influenza: The Long Way from Animal Models Towards a Real-Life Universal Flu Vaccine

Anna Schmidt et al.

Summary: Current flu vaccines mainly rely on strain-specific antibodies which may not protect against drifted or newly emerged strains. Therefore, research on universal flu vaccines that target conserved parts of the virus is a top priority. Tissue-resident memory T cells in the respiratory tract play a crucial role in providing efficient heterologous immunity, making them key components of universal flu vaccines. Recent studies on T cell-based flu immunity, along with preclinical and clinical trials of T cell-evoking vaccines, are crucial for the development of effective flu vaccine policies.

Safety, Immunogenicity, and Protective Efficacy of a Chimeric A/B Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine in a Mouse Model

Ekaterina Stepanova et al.

Summary: This study developed an experimental chimeric influenza vaccine that efficiently induced immune responses against both influenza A and B viruses, providing comprehensive protection. However, further optimization may be needed due to mismatch of T-cell epitopes.
