Shape matters: relevance of carapace for brachyuran crab invaders

Marc Farre et al.

Summary: This study used geometric morphometrics to analyze the impact of carapace morphology on the invasive ability of marine decapod crustaceans. The findings suggest that invaders with extreme carapace traits often possess ecological advantages, while those with intermediate morphology tend to overlap ecologically with native species. It was also evaluated the potential effect of a future invasive event from another crab species on the community morphospace. The results confirm the usefulness of the morphometric approach in assessing the invasive potential of crab species, but call for further studies to validate the methodology.

Summary: Cryptic species, recently recognized due to advances in molecular studies, present a challenge to traditional taxonomic work with low morphological but significant genetic differences. New taxonomic methods are being developed but have not been tested for many animal groups yet.

Native and non-native species of Litopenaeus Perez-Farfante, 1969 (Crustacea: Penaeidae) from the East Atlantic: Geometric morphometrics as a tool for taxonomic discrimination

Alex B. De Moraes et al.

Summary: This study used geometric morphometric analyses to identify differences in the cephalothorax shape that would help discriminate the native and non-native species of Litopenaeus of the South American coast. Significant interspecific differences in shape were found in the shape of this body structure.
