Positive definiteness in coupled strain gradient elasticity

Lidiia Nazarenko et al.

Summary: The study examines the linear theory of coupled gradient elasticity for hemitropic second gradient materials. By diagonalization and matrix representation, inequalities for positive definiteness are obtained, with results matching those in the literature under certain special conditions.

Elasticity of Anisotropic Low-Density Lattice Materials

Danial Molavitabrizi et al.

Summary: Computational first-order homogenization theory is applied to analyze the elastic behavior of generally anisotropic lattice materials, tailored for one-dimensional structural elements to reduce computational cost. The effective elastic behavior of lattice materials is derived consistently with various homogenization approaches, and a shear correction factor is introduced compared to previous studies. This computational tool is versatile in analyzing planar or spatial stretching- and bending-dominated lattices with arbitrary topology and anisotropy, and symmetry identification based on the monoclinic distance function is essential for lattices with non-apparent symmetry.

Inverse analysis of metamaterials and parameter determination by means of an automatized optimization problem

Navid Shekarchizadeh et al.

Summary: A novel parameter determination technique is developed for material models in continuum mechanics aimed at describing metamaterials. An automatized optimization process is developed specifically for obtaining metamaterials parameters, which aims at minimizing a mechanically meaningful error function. The parameter identification procedure is tested for an exemplary extension experiment of a metamaterial, proving to be robust and reliable.

On the polar nature and invariance properties of a thermomechanical theory for continuum-on-continuum homogenization

Kranthi K. Mandadapu et al.

Summary: This paper rigorously argues for the importance of considering the continuum derived by homogenization of extensive quantities as a polar medium, with contributions to angular momentum and energy balances from body couples and couple stresses defined in terms of the underlying microscopic state. The paper also explores the invariance of macroscopic stress and heat flux, as well as the form-invariance of macroscopic balance laws.

Investigating the mechanical response of microscale pantographic structures fabricated by multiphoton lithography

Zacharias Vangelatos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the design of microscale pantographic structures to achieve hyperelastic response and large deformations in micromechanical devices. Finite element analysis simulations reveal the behavior of the structure with respect to its geometrical parameters, while in situ SEM microindentation tensile testing validates the feasibility of microscale pantographic structures.

A model for the second strain gradient continua reinforced with extensible fibers in plane elastostatics

Seyed Ehsan Seyed Bolouri et al.

Summary: A continuum model based on the second strain gradient theory is presented to study the mechanics of an elastic solid reinforced with extensible fibers. The extension and bending kinematics of the fibers are formulated using the second and third gradient of the continuum deformation. The obtained triple forces and stresses are found to be in conjunction with the Piola-type triple stress, providing important energy contributions on edges and points of Cauchy cuts.

Inverse Hooke's law and complementary strain energy in coupled strain gradient elasticity

Lidiia Nazarenko et al.

Summary: In this study, the inverse Hooke's law and complementary strain energy density were examined in the context of the theory of coupled gradient elasticity for second gradient materials. By transforming the equation for the potential energy density to uncouple strains and strain gradient, tensorial relations for compliance tensors were determined and found to be valid for arbitrary material symmetry classes. The compliance tensors were characterized by eight independent constants in the case of hemitropic materials, and explicit expressions for these constants were compared with a direct solution, showing identical results.

Summary: This study examines the size effects exhibited by mechanical metamaterials using a second-order asymptotic homogenization method based on strain gradient theory. The analysis shows that both stiffening and softening size effects can be fully captured by employing effective strain gradient continua models.

Additive manufacturing introduced substructure and computational determination of metamaterials parameters by means of the asymptotic homogenization

Bilen Emek Abali et al.

Summary: Metamaterials exhibit a response that deviates from conventional elasticity, captured by introducing additional parameters to extend the theory. When describing materials with a substructure at a microscopic level, introducing extra constitutive parameters is necessary. Asymptotic homogenization can be used to determine these parameters when accurate knowledge of the substructure is available.
