Climate change research and the search for solutions: rethinking interdisciplinarity

E. Lisa F. Schipper et al.

Summary: Growing political pressure to address climate change is driving calls for interdisciplinary approaches that can offer deeper insights. However, many current approaches fail to effectively merge different disciplines, leading to reductionist and context-deprived analysis. To improve climate solutions, we need to rethink interdisciplinarity by accepting diverse narratives, embracing multiple perspectives, and integrating appropriate disciplines to understand human systems better.

Unequal Protection Revisited: Planning for Environmental Justice, Hazard Vulnerability, and Critical Infrastructure in Communities of Color

Marccus D. Hendricks et al.

Summary: Existing environmental justice and hazard vulnerability literatures fail to adequately address key texts and topics related to critical physical infrastructure and social vulnerability. Neighborhoods are not inherently vulnerable, but are affected by systematically sequestered, neglected, and underserved built environments. The outcomes are shaped by social processes and patterns of planning and development influenced by power and privilege, leading to areas of both prosperity and disadvantage.
