Can China achieve its water use peaking in 2030? A scenario analysis based on LMDI and Monte Carlo method

Chenjun Zhang et al.

Summary: China aims to achieve a water use control target of 7000 x 10(8) m(3) by 2030, making it a pressing issue to determine how to reach the peak water use target. By decomposing the driving factors of production and domestic water use, economic development is identified as the primary factor in water use growth, with different scenarios leading to varying trends in production and domestic water use.

Analysis of exploitation control in typical groundwater over-exploited area in North China Plain

Kairan Wang et al.

Summary: Groundwater in the North China Plain is extensively exploited, leading to severe over-exploitation problems. A study in Shandong province provides analysis and forecasts of water demand, supply, and conservation in over-exploited areas, along with a method for analyzing the potential for groundwater exploitation control. The study shows significant potential for groundwater exploitation control in Shandong province's over-exploited areas in the coming years.

A multi-factor integrated method of calculation unit delineation for hydrological modeling in large mountainous basins

Bu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a hillslope-asymmetry-elevation-band-aspect-based (HEA) delineation method was proposed for large mountainous basins, which can accurately characterize the hydrological processes of each hillslope by considering hillslope asymmetry, elevation band, and aspect. The performance of HEA method was validated in the Nu River basin in Southwest China, demonstrating good agreement between simulated hydrographs and observations. Further numerical experiments revealed the significant influence of hillslope delineation factors on streamflow process, as well as the contributions of underlying surface homogeneity and meteorological forcing on streamflow variations.

Generating surface soil moisture at 30 m spatial resolution using both data fusion and machine learning toward better water resources management at the field scale

Ahmed Samir Abowarda et al.

Summary: Soil moisture products from passive microwave remote sensing have low spatial resolution, while active sensors can provide higher resolution but lower temporal resolution. This study used data fusion and random forest models to generate continuous surface soil moisture estimates at 30 m x 30 m, improving accuracy and spatial distribution.

A decadal (2008-2017) daily evapotranspiration data set of 1 km spatial resolution and spatial completeness across the North China Plain using TSEB and data fusion

Caijin Zhang et al.

Summary: Daily continuous ET estimates at 1 km resolution were successfully obtained across the North China Plain using a data fusion approach and the Two-Source Energy Balance model. The estimated LE and ET data showed good agreement with in situ measurements, capturing seasonal variations and temporal trends effectively.

Summary: WaterGAP is a global hydrological model that assesses water resources on all land areas of the Earth, particularly focusing on water use and stress under climate change. It improves understanding of continental water storage variations, with a specific focus on overexploitation and depletion of water resources.
