Rapidly Migrating Secondary Bedforms Can Persist on the Lee of Slowly Migrating Primary River Dunes

J. Y. Zomer et al.

Summary: Secondary bedforms superimposed on primary dunes have been observed globally in rivers, but their impact on sediment transport dynamics has been unclear. This study found that secondary bedforms play a crucial role in bedload sediment transport, with their migration sometimes even exceeding that of primary dunes. The steepness of the primary dune's lee slope appears to control the persistence or dissipation of superimposed bedforms.

Large-Scale Scour in Response to Tidal Dominance in Estuaries

Jasper Leuven et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential third mechanism of tidal scour in estuaries and deltas, in addition to width constriction and draw-down during river discharge extremes. Through a 1D-morphodynamic model, it was found that tidal asymmetry can lead to landward transport and scours, which reduce the residual current and maintain morphologic equilibrium. Scour conditions globally occur and can be predicted in estuaries under future changes using a proposed predictor dependent on width convergence and the ratio of specific peak tidal discharge to specific river discharge.
