The Influence of Channel Deepening on Tides, River Discharge Effects, and Storm Surge

S. A. Talke et al.

Summary: The study combined archival research, semi-analytical models, and numerical simulations to investigate how changes to channel geometry affect tidal properties and flood dynamics in a hyposynchronous, strongly frictional estuary with a landward decay in tidal amplitudes. The research found that increased shipping channel depths were the main driver behind observed changes in tidal characteristics, while factors like channel shortening and width reduction had minor effects. Tidal amplitude increases were spatially variable, with the largest changes occurring 20-25 km from the estuary inlet. Numerical modeling confirmed larger tidal and storm surge amplitudes today compared to historical conditions, with peak water levels simulated to be higher under 1898 bathymetry due to record river discharge during storms.
