Sustainable disposal of excess sludge: Post-thermal hydrolysis for anaerobically digested sludge

Chen Cai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of post-thermal hydrolysis process (THP) temperature on methane yields, dewatering performance, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in sludge digestate. Results showed that temperatures above 160 degrees C were optimal, leading to increased methane yield, improved dewatering performance, and reduced abundance of ARGs. The energy balance analysis indicated that the AD-THP configuration could be a promising alternative for sustainable disposal of excess sludge, with a net energy output up to 372 kW.h/t DS.

Performance evaluation and microbial community analysis of mesophilic and thermophilic sludge fermentation processes coupled with thermal hydrolysis

E. Hosseini Koupaie et al.

Summary: The research found that coupling thermal hydrolysis (TH) and acidogenic fermentation can effectively increase the production of soluble organics in sludge, but it may reduce overall microbial diversity. Pre-hydrolysis achieved higher solubilization and VFAs production, and stimulated the growth of more kinetically efficient fermentative bacteria.

Significant effect of pH on tetracycline resistance genes reduction during sludge thermal hydrolysis treatment

Gang Xue et al.

Summary: The study showed that under acidic conditions (pH 3), thermal hydrolysis treatment has the best effect on reducing tetracycline resistance genes in waste activated sludge, mainly because under this condition, the release of DNA and organic matter is less, and organic matter helps protect DNA, leading to a decrease in the release of genes.
