Improving anaerobic digestion mass balance calculations through stoichiometry and usual substrate characterization

Roman Moscoviz et al.

Summary: This paper presents a theoretical framework for deriving process indicators from estimates of organic waste elemental composition to optimize anaerobic digestion technology. Semi-empirical equations are provided to estimate elemental composition for missing analyses. A revised stoichiometric reaction is proposed to consider biomass yield and nitrogen, leading to a more accurate estimation of ammonia production and volatile solids loss. The stoichiometric reaction also allows for predicting biogas quality and mass loss, with a proposed correction factor for volatile solids removal in real case studies.

Continuous medium chain carboxylic acids production from excess sludge by granular chain-elongation process

Qinglian Wu et al.

Summary: The production of short chain carboxylic acids (SCCAs) is a primary method for recycling excess sludge (ES). This study utilized chain elongation technology to upgrade SCCAs-rich sludge into medium chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs) with high hydrophobicity. The research achieved high yields of MCCAs and obtained branched-MCCAs for the first time, laying a foundation for ES recycling.

Anaerobic biodegradation of phenol in wastewater treatment: achievements and limits

M. Concetta Tomei et al.

Summary: Anaerobic biodegradation of toxic compounds in industrial wastewater is an attractive solution for energy and resource recovery, but faces challenges due to low kinetics compared to aerobic processes. Research on anaerobic phenol degradation focuses on microbiological and technological aspects to enhance competitiveness, with a gap still existing between aerobic and anaerobic performance. Efforts are needed to develop powerful technologies and effective strategies to improve the anaerobic process and move towards more sustainable wastewater treatment.

Genome-Centric Metatranscriptomics Analysis Reveals the Role of Hydrochar in Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Activated Sludge

Zhijian Shi et al.

Summary: Hydrochar was found to significantly increase methane production rate and yield of waste activated sludge by enhancing acidification and methanogenesis processes. Metagenome-assembled genomes enriched by hydrochar were identified to be involved in direct interspecies electron transfer, contributing to the enhanced methane yield. Additionally, specific microorganisms related to organics degradation were also found to potentially play a role in the increased methane yield.

Revealing the Mechanism of Biochar Enhancing the Production of Medium Chain Fatty Acids from Waste Activated Sludge Alkaline Fermentation Liquor

Shu-Lin Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that fine biochar (75-150 μm) was more effective in enhancing the production of MCFAs, with increased electron transfer efficiency and shifts in microbial taxonomic composition and functional enzyme abundance. This was attributed to the biochar's high redoxactive properties and ability to promote electron transfer for MCFAs production during the CE process.
