Inducing granulation within a full-scale activated sludge system to improve settling

Isaac Avila et al.

Summary: Cold-climate biological nutrient removal facilities often experience poor settling mixed liquor during winter, but by introducing an anaerobic selector and hydrocyclone selective wasting, improvements in settling behavior and treatment capacity can be achieved.

Densification dependence in continuous flow and sequential batch granulation systems on reactor feast-to-famine duration ratio

Zhaohui An et al.

Summary: The duration ratio of feast-to-famine conditions has a larger impact on the success of aerobic granulation compared to the applied gravity selection pressure. Retrofitting guidance for existing wastewater treatment facilities was provided by deriving a theoretical equation correlating the feast-to-famine ratio to routine bioreactor operating parameters. This study highlights the importance of providing adequate feast and famine conditions for aerobic granulation in continuous flow wastewater treatment facilities.

Size of biological flocs in activated sludge systems: Influence of hydrodynamic parameters at different scales

Yoan Pechaud et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between hydrodynamic conditions and activated sludge floc size properties in different systems. The Floc size distribution mainly depends on the average shear rate and circulation time, with local properties like maximal shear rate also playing a role. Flocs were slightly larger in the pilot bubble column compared to the standard stirred reactor, and characteristic diameters were lower in the filtration zone than in the aeration zone in full-scale systems.

Application of Hydrocyclones to Improve Membrane Technologies for Urban Wastewater Treatment

Zhuzbay Kassymbekov et al.

Summary: The improved membrane technology of wastewater treatment involves the preliminary capture of heavy and suspended particles in a hydrocyclone before water treatment in a modern membrane bioreactor. Preparing wastewater with a hydrocyclone before post-treatment process can increase the cleaning capacity of membrane elements by reducing the load of accumulation of coarse impurities on the membrane surface.
