Monitoring of pesticides in surface water, pesticides removal efficiency in drinking water treatment plant and potential health risk to consumers using Monte Carlo simulation in Behbahan City, Iran

Roshanak Rezaei Kalantary et al.

Summary: Excessive use of pesticides can contaminate water sources and affect consumer health. This study investigated pesticide concentrations in raw and treated water, evaluated treatment efficiency, and assessed health risks for consumers. Results showed significant reduction of pesticides in drinking water, with most removal occurring in coagulation-flocculation and rapid sand filtration units. Risk assessment indicated low overall hazard quotients, with higher values observed in younger individuals and children. Measures to regulate sale and use of pesticides, especially banned ones, are recommended.

Diclofenac removal in water supply by adsorption on composite low-cost material

Gledson Renan Salomao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the adsorption of diclofenac sodium using a low-cost composite material, PTCSBA/ Fe3+, with the best efficiency at 0.3 g mass achieving a 93% removal rate. The pseudo second-order kinetic model showed good fit with a determination coefficient of 0.97, indicating satisfactory characteristics for DIC removal.

Individual and synergistic toxic effects of carbendazim and chlorpyrifos on zebrafish embryonic development

Ruiqi Fan et al.

Summary: The fungicide carbendazim and insecticide chlorpyrifos, used together to protect fruit and vegetable crops in China, have potentially harmful effects on zebrafish embryonic development, both individually and in combination, showing significant synergistic effects. These findings suggest the need for health and environmental risk assessments for various combinations of these agents.

Environmental aspects of hormones estriol, 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol: Electrochemical processes as next-generation technologies for their removal in water matrices

Nadia Hortense Torres et al.

Summary: This review discusses the environmental scenario of hormones estriol (E3), 17 beta-estradiol (E2), and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2), emphasizing their origins, characteristics, interactions, environmental dispersion, and the pathological and toxicological damage they cause. Studies on the treatment of these endocrine disruptors using electrochemical processes are highlighted, along with the detection of these micropollutants in various environmental matrices at concentrations capable of causing changes in the endocrine system of organisms. The review also emphasizes the importance of studying electrochemically-driven processes for the removal of emerging micropollutants in order to address the environmental concerns surrounding these hormones.

Mixed toxicity of chlorpyrifos and dichlorvos show antagonistic effects in the endangered fish species golden mahseer (Tor putitora)

Prabesh Singh Kunwar et al.

Summary: The study found that the golden mahseer has higher toxicity to chlorpyrifos than dichlorvos, with their combined effect showing antagonism. Exposure to both pesticides led to reduced oxygen consumption and increased opercular movements, with chlorpyrifos treatments showing more persistent effects. Decreased feeding attempts were observed in chlorpyrifos and mixture treatments. The acute toxicity data can be used to assess the maximum tolerance level of golden mahseer to these pesticides, and the sub-lethal end point responses can be applied in monitoring the environmental risk posed by the pesticides to aquatic life.

Covalent organic frameworks as robust materials for mitigation of environmental pollutants

Ahmad Reza Bagheri et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are versatile materials with unique features such as high specific surface area and chemical-physical stability, making them suitable for treating pollutants in the environment. Researchers have started to focus on COFs as a viable alternative material. Through adsorption and degradation, COFs can effectively remove a wide variety of hazardous pollutants.

High sensitivity of invertebrate detritivores from tropical streams to different pesticides

Aydee Cornejo et al.

Summary: Freshwater organisms exhibit varying sensitivity to pesticides, with three common detritivores being sensitive to insecticides and fungicides commonly used in concentrations that lead to significant mortality. Sensitivity to pesticides differs among species, with the highest sensitivity found for chlorpyrifos and chlorothalonil. Species sensitivity distributions show that the studied detritivores are among the most sensitive species to these pesticides, highlighting the importance of assessing ecological risks in tropical ecosystems.

Pesticides in surface water from Brazil and Paraguay cross-border region: Screening using LC-QTOF MS and correlation with land use and occupation through multivariate analysis

Raquel W. Becker et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of pesticides in surface water from the Brazil and Paraguay cross-border region using a screening method based on LC-QTOF MS. A total of 43 pesticides from different classes were tentatively identified, with atrazine, dinoterb, and their metabolites being the most frequently detected compounds. Cluster analysis and Principal Component Analysis were used to classify monitoring sites based on pollution levels and explore the relationship between pesticides and land use. Open access software was used to predict the in silico persistence and toxicity of compounds, with fipronil TPs and difeconazole having the highest persistence time.
