Biosorption of nickel ions using fungal biomass Penicillium sp. MRF1 for the treatment of nickel electroplating industrial effluent

Sathyavathi Sundararaju et al.

Summary: The biomass of Penicillium sp. MRF1 was found to effectively remove nickel (II) ions from electroplating industrial effluent. By investigating the response surface methodology and equilibrium data of adsorption isotherm models, it was concluded that the fungal biomass showed promise as a biosorbent for nickel removal. Analysis of the biosorption mechanism revealed the presence of functional groups on the surface of the fungal biomass, contributing to the efficient removal of nickel ions.

Biosorption efficiency of nickel by various endophytic bacterial strains for removal of nickel from electroplating industry effluents: an operational study

Saket Kashyap et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the effective use of endophytic microbial strains isolated from plants growing in nickel-contaminated soil for nickel bioremediation. The isolated bacterial strains showed high nickel biosorption efficiency and plant growth-promoting activities, making them suitable for large-scale biosorption of nickel from electroplating industry effluent. Kinetic studies and adsorption isotherms further supported the nickel biosorption ability of the endophytic strains.

Valorization of lemon peel waste as biosorbent for the simultaneous removal of nickel and cadmium from industrial effluents

M. Villen-Guzman et al.

Summary: The competitive biosorption of Ni(II) and Cd(II) on alkali-modified lemon peel showed efficient removal of both metals, with Ni(II) being better described by a pseudo first-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ni(II) and Cd(II) reached as high as about 0.626 and 0.726 mmol g(-1), respectively, under optimal conditions. However, these values were reduced in the presence of coexisting heavy metals.

Sustainable removal of Ni(II) from waste water by freshly isolated fungal strains

Rohit Sharma et al.

Summary: The release of untreated wastewater containing biotoxic heavy metals poses a significant environmental and health challenge, but microbial removal techniques offer a promising alternative. The study investigated detoxification mechanisms of nickel-resistant fungal strains, identified as Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus flavus, and identified optimal conditions for industrial exploitation. Findings suggest the potential for large-scale removal of nickel from waste generating industries through simultaneous mechanistic removal approaches.

Equilibrium and thermodynamic investigation of biosorption of nickel from water by activated carbon made from palm kernel chaff

Chidozie Charles Nnaji et al.

Summary: Novel biosorbents were derived from a waste product of palm kernel oil extraction known as palm kernel chaff (PKC). The sorption capacity of CPKC for nickel ions was found to be the highest at pH 9.0 and 35 degrees C. The process was determined to be exothermic and entropy-driven, with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model showing the best correlation to the experimental data.
