Assessment of heavy metal contamination in soils at the Kpone landfill site, Ghana: Implication for ecological and health risk assessment

Franklin Obiri-Nyarko et al.

Summary: This study assessed the concentrations of heavy metals in soils at the Kpone landfill site in Ghana using AAS, and found extreme pollution levels throughout the site. The main sources of heavy metals were identified as waste materials and traffic activities, with significant ecological and health risks posed to the surrounding area.

Application of membrane separation technology in the treatment of leachate in China: A review

Weiming Chen et al.

Summary: Membrane separation technologies, mainly nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), have been widely used in China for treating landfill leachate. The technologies are mainly concentrated in eastern and southwestern China, where municipal solid waste (MSW) is relatively high. However, the membrane retentate produced by the technology is heavily contaminated, posing a significant challenge.

Demand gap analysis of municipal solid waste landfill in Beijing: Based on the municipal solid waste generation

Bingchun Liu et al.

Summary: The study utilized Grey Relational Analysis and Long and Short-Term Memory (GRA-LSTM) to predict MSW generation in Beijing and estimated landfill area. The MAPE value of the combined model was 7.3, indicating better performance compared to other methods, while landfill demand in Beijing is on the rise.

Distribution Characteristics, Pollution Assessment, and Source Identification of Heavy Metals in Soils Around a Landfill-Farmland Multisource Hybrid District

Honghua Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed heavy metal pollution around a landfill, with chromium and arsenic posing potential risks to human health, and mercury posing significant risks to the ecological environment. Unlike natural sources and agricultural activities, the landfill serves as the main accumulation source of heavy metals.

Mass balance of nine trace elements in two karst catchments in southwest China

Jicheng Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mass balance and fate of nine trace elements (TEs) in two karst catchments in southwest China, revealing net fluxes and flux pathways for each element. Rainfall and litterfall were identified as major input pathways, while crop harvest was the major output pathway for TEs, indicating the influence of both natural factors and human activities on the fate of TEs in these karst regions.

Characterization and treatment of landfill leachate: A review

Chunying Teng et al.

Summary: Landfill leachate is a complex organic wastewater that must be properly disposed of to prevent ecotoxicity and environmental damage. Understanding the physiochemical characteristics and environmental behaviors of landfill leachate is essential for effective treatment. This study critically reviews recent advances in the properties, characterization methods, and treatment techniques of landfill leachate.
