Effects of chicken farming on soil properties and root-associated bacterial communities in a bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox) ecosystem

Xiaoping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of bamboo-chicken farming on soil bacterial communities and found significant changes in bacterial composition in both soil and bamboo root systems related to C and N cycling, plant growth, and abiotic stress adaptation. Soil AN, AP, and TP were identified as driving factors for bacterial composition and C cycle changes. The microbial community and soil stoichiometry changes induced by chicken farming may alter bamboo ecosystem functions, highlighting the potential risks of nutrient and biodiversity loss.

Ammonium Removal in Aquaponics Indicates Participation of Comammox Nitrospira

Julia Heise et al.

Summary: Aquaponic systems are sustainable solutions for food production that combine fish growth and vegetable production in a single recirculating system. This study found that even in highly efficient aquaponic systems, Nitrospira bacteria were involved in ammonium removal at low steady-state ammonia concentrations. The system effectively removes ammonia and nitrite to low levels and maintains steady-state nitrate concentrations.

The effect of optimized carbon source on the synthesis and composition of exopolysaccharides produced by Lactobacillus paracasei

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict the optimal carbon source for higher production of exopolysaccharides (EPS) by Lactobacillus paracasei TD 062, which showed that optimizing carbon source not only increases EPS production, but also alters EPS monosaccharide composition by enhancing enzyme activity in the synthesis pathways.

Summary: Bioponics combines biological treatment of nutrient-rich waste with hydroponics. Chicken manure based-nutrient film technique bioponics effectively released nitrogen and phosphorus, promoting efficient growth of lettuce. Microbial genera like Nocardiopsis, Romboutsia, and Saccharomonospora may play crucial roles in achieving better nutrient recovery in bioponics.

The behavior of antibiotic-resistance genes and their relationships with the bacterial community and heavy metals during sewage sludge composting

Xiuwen Qiu et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of biochar and peat can significantly reduce the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in sewage sludge compost, leading to changes in bacterial composition and a decrease in pathogenic bacteria. Furthermore, the addition of BC and PT also resulted in lower concentrations of heavy metals compared to the control group, and these metals showed significant positive correlations with ARGs.

Organic matter- and temperature-driven deterministic assembly processes govern bacterial community composition and functionality during manure composting

Yuanyuan Bao et al.

Summary: The study found that deterministic assembly processes, governed by organic matter content and quality as well as temperature, play a predominant role in shaping bacterial community assembly and functions during organic waste composting. Specific bacterial taxa were selected at different stages by these assembly processes, ultimately influencing community functions such as environmental processing and carbohydrate metabolism. These findings are crucial for understanding and predicting microbial-driven composting processes and for guiding environmentally-friendly composting practices.

Long-term effects of acetylene on denitrifying N2O production: Biomass performance and microbial community

Xun-yu Shen et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to high concentrations of acetylene can lead to high N2O production during nitrite denitrification. The microbial community shifted towards domination by Saprospiraceae and nosZII-harboring bacteria under these conditions. Removal of acetylene resulted in rapid restoration of N2O reduction.
