Controllable material removal behavior of 6H-SiC wafer in nanoscale polishing

Qiufa Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between diamond abrasives and the 6H-SiC wafer surface during ultra-precision polishing was analyzed through experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that controlling material removal uniformity and restricting abrasive cutting depth to tens of nanometers or less can achieve a smooth, scratch-free and almost damage-free wafer surface. These findings provide insights into the importance of controlling material removal uniformity in nanoscale manufacturing processes.

Deformation behaviour of soft-brittle polycrystalline materials determined by nanoscratching with a sharp indenter

Weihai Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the material removal mechanisms of polycrystalline zinc selenide through nanoscratching tests, revealing that ductile mode material removal occurs in the edge-forward direction while brittle fractures are seen in the faceforward direction. The study also shows that {111} planes are the primary slip and cleavage planes, while {110} planes play secondary roles in material removal.

Micromechanics of material detachment during adhesive wear: A numerical assessment of Archard's wear model

Summary: Research has shown that a linear wear relation can be recovered only when material removal progresses by plastic deformation at the asperity tip. However, this linearity breaks down when cleavage cracking dominates the material removal.

Study of wear particles formation at single asperity contact: An experimental and numerical approach

M. A. Mekicha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the friction and wear behavior of a single roll asperity sliding through a sheet metal using a micro-mechanical experimental approach and material point method (MPM) scratch simulations. It reveals that ploughing is the dominant wear mechanism under lubricated conditions, while wedge forming is the main wear mechanism in the absence of lubricant. The influence of chrome plating on reducing wear particles formation is attributed to its interaction with the lubricant, with almost all frictional resistance arising from deforming the substrate in lubricated contact.

Removal behavior of micropipe in 4H-SiC during micromachining

Yuhua Huang et al.

Summary: Silicon carbide is a good semiconductor material due to its performance in high-voltage and high-frequency fields, but defects like micropipe can impact device performance. Research shows that adjusting penetration depth during micromachining may not completely eliminate the effect of micropipe, but different dynamic behaviors of 4H-SiC under various penetration depths could be a strategy for detecting or controlling the impact of micropipe.
