The study introduces a newly developed algorithm to evaluate the running-in wear process of plateau surfaces, addressing the calculation problems and human judgment required in previous methods. This proposed method offers easy, precise, and direct evaluation of plateau surfaces and is expected to aid in determining optimal machining methods and conditions.
The plateau surface evaluation methods proposed in ISO 13565 cannot be used to consistently evaluate the running-in wear process. An evaluation method to calculate the roughness parameters defined in ISO 13565-3 for plateau surfaces in the initial wear states has been reported previously. However, this method has problems in calculating the roughness parameters and requires human judgment for setting thresholds. Hence, a newly developed algorithm is proposed here to solve these problems and evaluate the running-in wear process of plateau surfaces, which was thus far impossible using the evaluation method in ISO 13565. The proposed method can evaluate the plateau surface easily, precisely, and directly, and is expected to support the determination of the optimum machining methods, machining conditions.
