Hydroxycinnamate Amides: Intriguing Conjugates of Plant Protective Metabolites

Dylan R. Zeiss et al.

Summary: The synthesis of aromatic monoamines and aliphatic polyamines is responsive to environmental stresses and can generate HCA amides, which play a role in plant defense. Conjugation of amines to hydroxycinnamic acids may reduce metabolite polarity and assist in translocation, stability, and compartmentalization, with recent metabolomic studies identifying HCAAs as biomarkers during plant-pathogen interactions.

Pathogen Effectors: Exploiting the Promiscuity of Plant Signaling Hubs

Evi Ceulemans et al.

Summary: Pathogens produce effectors to suppress plant immunity, posing a threat to crop yields and global food security. Interactomic studies have shown that pathogens target common plant proteins, known as effector hubs, from different kingdoms of life during infection. Key proteins, particularly those with intrinsically disordered domains, play central roles in various plant processes by interacting with multiple plant proteins.

Unravelling physiological signatures of tomato bacterial wilt and xylem metabolites exploited by Ralstonia solanacearum

Leo Gerlin et al.

Summary: The plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum proliferates rapidly in xylem vessels, leading to plant death at a tipping point in bacterial wilt dynamics. Metabolic and physiological changes during infection are similar to drought stress. Glutamine is identified as the preferred substrate for R. solanacearum during colonization.

A new insight into the contribution of putrescine to defense in Arabidopsis thaliana

Changxin Liu et al.

Summary: Polyamines accumulate in response to stress, playing a protective role in defense. Put treatment triggers local and systemic transcriptional reprogramming, leading to local salicylic acid accumulation and systemic defense against virulent bacteria. Put signaling is mainly ROS dependent and partially compromised by mutations in EDS1, SID2, and NPR1.
