Working landscapes need at least 20% native habitat

Lucas A. Garibaldi et al.

Summary: International agreements aim to conserve 17% of Earth's land area by 2020 but do not include area-based conservation targets within working landscapes. Only 38% of countries have minimum area requirements for conserving native habitats within working landscapes. The authors argue for increasing native habitats to at least 20% of working landscape area and including a minimum habitat restoration target in the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Summary: The study found that species richness of most taxonomic groups, as well as multidiversity and richness of pollinators, increased with temporal continuity of AES types. AES flowering fields supported different species assemblages than calcareous grasslands, but became more similar to seminatural grasslands with increasing temporal continuity.

Landscape and farm-level management for conservation of potential pollinators in Indonesian cocoa agroforests

Manuel Toledo-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that potential-pollinator habitats surrounding the farm and increased canopy cover enhance the abundance of ants and Diptera, while the distance to forest did not have an effect. Regarding the abundance of Diptera and ants, it is more important to focus on potential-pollinator habitats surrounding the farm rather than manipulating leaf-litter.
