Asymmetric Social Comparison and Life Satisfaction in Social Networks

Francisco Olivos et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of social comparison on subjective well-being, finding that downward comparison has a positive effect on life satisfaction, while upward comparison has a negative effect. Moreover, upward comparison seems to have a more significant impact on well-being than downward comparison, and the positive effect of downward comparison slightly decreases when support is reciprocally exchanged between respondents and targets. The application of social network analysis provides insights into the mechanisms of social comparison processes.
