Transfusion-associated hyperkalemia in pediatric population: Prevalence, risk factors, survival, infusion rate, and RBC unit features

Chisa Yamada et al.

Summary: Hyperkalemia is a rare but life-threatening complication of RBC transfusion, with a low prevalence but high 1-day mortality rate of 20% in children. Patients with multiple serious comorbidities may have a higher risk of developing TAH. The median total RBC volume transfused <= 12 hours before the TAH event was 24% of patient estimated total blood volume, with a median infusion rate of 19.6 ml/kg/h.
