Ice-fishing handling practices and their effects on the short-term post-release behaviour of Largemouth bass

L. LaRochelle et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the post-release behavior of largemouth bass caught during ice fishing is influenced by various handling practices, including exposure to air or placement on ice that can lead to lower skin temperatures. After release, largemouth bass tend to select deeper water with increasing water temperatures and exhibit reduced locomotory activity over time. Skin temperature has a significant impact on locomotory activity, with fish having warmer skin temperatures showing lower activity, especially in deeper and warmer water conditions post-release. Anglers practicing catch-and-release during winter should consider minimizing fish exposure to subfreezing temperatures to avoid alterations in their behavior after release.

Depth-based barotrauma severity, reflex impairment and stress response in two species of ice-angled fish

Andrew L. Althoff et al.

Summary: Barotrauma is a common occurrence in fish caught from deep waters, and venting is often used by anglers to alleviate this issue. Research has shown that greater capture depths result in more severe barotrauma, and bluegill tend to experience symptoms at shallower depths compared to black crappie. After venting, bluegill showed more improvement in reflex action mortality predictor (RAMP) scores compared to black crappie, suggesting species-specific differences in their response to barotrauma and venting.

Chasing Northern Pike under Ice: Long-Distance Movements Following Catch-and-Release Ice Angling

Christopher M. Somers et al.

Summary: Catch-and-release ice angling is a popular recreational activity, but little is known about the postrelease behavior of fish in the winter. A study tracking Northern Pike in Buffalo Pound Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada found that despite cold water temperatures, the fish exhibited unexpected long-distance movements postrelease. Furthermore, postrelease behavior varied with fish size, with larger fish moving shorter distances initially compared to smaller fish.

Underwater robots provide similar fish biodiversity assessments as divers on coral reefs

Mathilde Maslin et al.

Summary: The study found that using semi-autonomous underwater vehicles (SAUV) for coral reef fish diversity monitoring is more accurate than diver-based methods, especially in recording fish biomass. Videos taken by SAUV can conduct fish transects more frequently and at greater depths, at a lower cost, making it a promising tool for monitoring fish assemblages in coral reef ecosystems.
