Investigating microplastic dynamics in soils: Orientation for sampling strategies and sample pre-procession

Collin Joel Weber et al.

Summary: Current research on microplastics in soils is mainly exploratory, and in order to gain a deeper understanding of microplastic dynamics, systematic studies are needed. Strategic soil sampling, meticulous fieldwork, and careful sample handling are crucial for establishing a comprehensive research on microplastics in soils.

Microplastics in wastewater outlets of Bandar Abbas city (Iran): A potential point source of microplastics into the Persian Gulf

Abolfazl Naji et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the release of microplastics from the wastewater outfall in Bandar Abbas City into the Persian Gulf, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most commonly recovered polymers in wastewater and sludge. Further research is needed at water treatment plants in the region to better assess microplastic discharge into the Persian Gulf.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Microplastics in freshwater sediment: A review on methods, occurrence, and sources

Ling Yang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in freshwater sediments, highlighting their ubiquitous presence and varying abundance in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The dominant shape of microplastics in freshwater sediment is fibers with a diameter less than 1 mm, with white/transparent and PE/PS as the most frequently recorded colors and types. The consistency in morphological characteristics and components of microplastics between marine and freshwater sediments may indicate their interlinkages and source-pathways.

Counting Nanoplastics in Environmental Waters by Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy after Cloud-Point Extraction and In Situ Labeling of Gold Nanoparticles

Yujian Lai et al.

Summary: A comprehensive method for detecting and counting nanoplastics (NPs) in environmental waters was developed using gold nanoparticle labeling and single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The method successfully detected various types and sizes (50-1200 nm) of NPs with high spiked recoveries, demonstrating its applicability in different scenarios.
