Tobacco Advertising Features That May Contribute to Product Appeal Among US Adolescents and Young Adults

Meghan Bridgid Moran et al.

Summary: This study identified several advertising tactics, such as sweepstakes offers, outdoor settings, flora imagery, and price reductions, associated with increased product appeal among youth and young adults. If further research confirms these findings, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration should consider restricting the use of these tactics in tobacco advertising.

Tobacco and Water: Testing the Health Halo Effect of Natural American Spirit Cigarette Ads and Its Relationship with Perceived Absolute Harm and Use Intentions

Irina A. Iles et al.

Summary: The study found that the advertising tactics used by Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company may mislead consumers into thinking their products are healthier and less harmful, but may also have negative impacts on smoking intentions. Eco-friendly language and plant imagery may reduce perceptions of healthfulness, increase perceptions of absolute harm, and have an indirect negative effect on smoking intentions, as opposed to the health halo effect created by other tactics like using the phrase tobacco and water. These inconsistent findings could be explained by different stimulus designs and message processing features.
