The immune-modulating pregnancy-specific glycoproteins evolve rapidly and their presence correlates with hemochorial placentation in primates

Wolfgang Zimmermann et al.

Summary: This study analyzed PSG genes in 57 primate species with hemochorial or epitheliochorial placentation. The results showed that almost all analyzed apes had around 10 PSG genes each, while Old World monkey genomes had 6 to 24 PSG genes. Surprisingly, only 1 to 7 PSG genes were identified in New World monkeys. The distribution and selection pattern of PSG in primates support the hypothesis that PSG are still evolving to optimize interactions between fetus and mother or potential pathogens in mammals with hemochorial placentation.
