Distributed Acoustic Sensing Using a Large-Volume Airgun Source and Internet Fiber in an Urban Area

Zhenghong Song et al.

Summary: In this study, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and a telecom fiber-optic cable were used to record the wavefield in urban areas, showing clear S-wave signals without observable P-wave signals. Improved signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved by stacking colinear channels, connecting multiple fibers within a single conduit, and using engineered fiber, providing frequent snapshots of the near surface across an urban area.

Plasma Hsp90 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis and relation to lung and skin involvement: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

Hana Storkanova et al.

Summary: According to the study, plasma levels of Hsp90 are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to healthy controls, and are associated with increased inflammatory activity, worsened lung function, and extent of skin involvement in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. In patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease treated with cyclophosphamide, baseline Hsp90 levels can predict changes in DLCO over 12 months of therapy.

Temporal Variation in Cultural Seismic Noise and Noise Correlation Functions during COVID-19 Lockdown in Canada

Ayodeji Paul Kuponiyi et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in reduced human activities, affecting seismic activities and short-period ambient noise. Significant drops in seismic power levels were observed near observation stations in Canada during the lockdown period, especially in Western Canada. Signal quality in the secondary microseism frequency band exhibited different patterns of variation.

Denoising Surface Waves Extracted From Ambient Noise Recorded by 1-D Linear Array Using Three-Station Interferometry of Direct Waves

Hongrui Qiu et al.

Summary: An automatic workflow for enhancing surface wave signals in ambient noise cross correlations was developed for a 1-D linear array, demonstrating significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio at high frequencies (>2 Hz). Reliable extraction of phase travel times in the frequency domain for Rayleigh and Love waves was achieved, revealing detailed internal structures of fault zones beneath the array. The method illuminated a flower-shaped structure of the San Jacinto fault damage zone, with a broad low-velocity zone narrowing with increasing period.

Contribution of climatic changes in mean and variability to monthly temperature and precipitation extremes

Karin van der Wiel et al.

Summary: Changes in the frequency of climate extremes are influenced by shifts in both mean climate and climate variability, with temperature extremes being more governed by mean climate warming and precipitation extremes responding more to changes in variability. Spatial variations play a significant role in the impact of extreme events, highlighting the importance of regional processes. The contributions of mean climate and variability to the probability ratio are independent of event threshold, magnitude of warming, and climate model.
