Characteristics of headaches among surgeons and associated factors: A cross-sectional study

Ameer Alhusuny et al.

Summary: One-third of MIS surgeons reported headaches, which were often accompanied by neck pain and associated with visual symptoms and neck/shoulder problems. Adopting non-neutral head/neck/shoulder positions during surgery may explain these symptoms, suggesting the need for evidence-based strategies to help surgeons manage them effectively.

Impact of accommodation, convergence and stereoacuity on perceived symptoms and surgical performance among surgeons

Ameer Alhusuny et al.

Summary: This study reveals a significant relationship between visual impairments and physical symptoms and performance scores in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) surgeons. Surgeons with more accommodation/convergence dysfunctions and/or poorer stereoacuity tended to have poorer objective performance scores during simulated surgical tasks in both viewing modes. Additionally, surgeons with poorer stereoacuity perceived themselves to have been less successful at accomplishing tasks, although they reported less intense physical symptoms and simulator sickness. Regular screening and vision therapy for surgeons may be necessary to reduce physical symptoms and enhance surgical performance.

Visual symptoms, Neck/shoulder problems and associated factors among surgeons performing Minimally Invasive Surgeries (MIS): A comprehensive survey

Ameer Alhusuny et al.

Summary: Among MIS surgeons, 31.0% reported neck/shoulder problems, 29.0% reported visual symptoms, and 15.5% reported both. There were significant associations between the prevalence and severity of neck/shoulder problems and visual symptoms, as well as with workplace and individual factors. Factors such as temperature, asymmetrical weight bearing, forward head movement, being female, and wearing vision correction glasses were significantly associated with these symptoms. Further evaluation of strategies to minimize strain on the neck/shoulder region and visual system is necessary.
