Applicability and Results of Liver Stiffness Measurement and Controlled Attenuation Parameter Using XL Probe for Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease in Candidates to Bariatric Surgery. A Single-Center Observational Study

Tao Wan et al.

Summary: Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) by FibroScan (R) XL probe were moderately applicable in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. However, when technically successful, they showed good reliability in diagnosing severe steatosis and fibrosis related to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).

Use of noninvasive scores for advanced liver fibrosis can guide the need for hepatic biopsy during bariatric procedures

Brooks V. Udelsman et al.

Summary: The study conducted at an academic medical center in the United States assessed the prevalence of advanced fibrosis in patients undergoing routine liver biopsy during bariatric surgery and evaluated the effectiveness of existing noninvasive risk calculators. The results showed a 3.4% prevalence of advanced fibrosis among 2465 patients, with the NAFLD fibrosis score demonstrating the highest NPV at 99% in screening out advanced fibrosis. Overall, the use of the NAFLD fibrosis score correctly ruled out advanced fibrosis in one-third of the study population, aiding in surgical decision-making.

Gastric Bypass Increases Circulating Bile Acids and Activates Hepatic Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) but Requires Intact Peroxisome Proliferator Activator Receptor Alpha (PPARα) Signaling to Significantly Reduce Liver Fat Content

Guilherme S. Mazzini et al.

Summary: The study showed that RYGB led to greater liver fat loss than a low-calorie diet, which was associated with increased fasting BA levels and increased expression of modulators of liver fat oxidation, FXR, and PPAR alpha. However, intact PPAR alpha signaling was necessary for resolution of NAFLD after RYGB.

Bariatric Surgery Reduces Cancer Risk in Adults With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Severe Obesity

Vinod K. Rustgi et al.

Summary: This study showed that bariatric surgery was significantly associated with reduced risks of any cancer and obesity-related cancer in NAFLD patients, especially in terms of obesity-related cancer. Additionally, significant risk reductions were observed among cirrhotic patients and different types of cancer after surgery.

A Placebo-Controlled Trial of Subcutaneous Semaglutide in Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Philip N. Newsome et al.

Summary: This phase 2 trial demonstrated that treatment with semaglutide resulted in a significantly higher percentage of patients with NASH resolution compared to placebo in patients with NASH, but did not show a significant between-group difference in the percentage of patients with an improvement in fibrosis stage.
