Bariatric Surgery and Osteoporosis

Julien Paccou et al.

Summary: Bariatric surgery has been increasingly recognized to adversely affect skeletal health, leading to high-turnover bone loss, deterioration in bone microarchitecture, and increased fracture risk. Factors such as nutrition, mechanical unloading, gut hormones, adipokines, and bone marrow adiposity may contribute to these effects. Selecting the most appropriate bariatric procedure and ensuring sufficient calcium, vitamin D, protein intake, and physical activity are important in mitigating negative impacts on bone health. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms and potential treatments for high-turnover bone loss after bariatric surgery.

Bone Mineral Density and Turnover After Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass: A Randomized Controlled Trial (Oseberg)

Dag Hofso et al.

Summary: Results of the study showed that bone mineral density decreased significantly more after RYGB compared to SG at the femoral neck, total hip, and lumbar spine. Additionally, markers of bone turnover were approximately 100% higher after RYGB than after SG. These changes were independently associated with the surgical procedure and not weight change.
