Effect of alkaline lignin on immobilization of cadmium and lead in soils and the associated mechanisms

Lizhi He et al.

Summary: Lignin can increase soil phosphorus availability and immobilize heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium, in acid soils. However, lignin is ineffective in immobilizing cadmium in alkaline soils.

Contrasting effects of carbon source recalcitrance on soil phosphorus availability and communities of phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms

Yanlan Huang et al.

Summary: It was found that lignin significantly increased soil available P concentrations due to chemical release of inorganic P and increased alkaline phosphatase activity. On the other hand, glucose and hemicellulose additions stimulated microbial metabolism of C, increasing microbial demand for P and enhancing soil P availability especially in the early incubation period. The microbial response to labile C additions led to increased P availability in the P-deficient soil, highlighting the importance of considering microbial processes in soil P management in agricultural ecosystems.

Effect of Long-Term Organic Fertilization in Flooded Rice Soil on Phosphorus Transformation and Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms

Dibyendu Chatterjee et al.

Summary: Long-term organic fertilization can enhance soil microbial and chemical properties, leading to increased phosphorus availability. Different organic fertilization treatments affect soil microbial enzyme activities, phosphorus solubilization, and microbial populations. Organic fertilization increases active C, N, and P pools in soil, improving overall soil quality.

Soil Biogeochemical Cycle Couplings Inferred from a Function-Taxon Network

Bin Ma et al.

Summary: This study identified key microbial taxa regulating soil biogeochemical processes using metagenomic data from forest soils in eastern China, highlighting the sensitivity of soil pH as an indicator for functional gene composition and diversity. A bipartite network inferred from metagenomic contigs revealed microbial taxa regulating coupled biogeochemical cycles between carbon and phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur, and nitrogen and iron, providing novel evidence for the coupling of soil biogeochemical cycles and demonstrating the efficacy of a new approach to investigate soil ecosystem functions.

Summary: The complexity of carbon compounds added to soil significantly affects microbial uptake of C and the composition of the soil microbial community. Application of slurry to soil decreases microbial biosynthesis and the cumulative respiration of carbohydrate compounds compared to treatments without slurry application.

Distribution Characteristics of phoD-Harbouring Bacterial Community Structure and Its Roles in Phosphorus Transformation in Steppe Soils in Northern China

Xiaoya Zhu et al.

Summary: The phoD-harbouring bacterial community plays a crucial role in hydrolyzing organic phosphorus in soil, improving soil phosphorus availability through mineralization of P-o. Different bacterial genera show varying abundance in relation to available P content in soil, demonstrating diverse and flexible P utilization strategies in response to environmental conditions.
