Summary: Warmer temperatures lead to higher incorporation of 18-oxygen in proteins of E. coli K12, but the absolute correlation with temperature is not significant, possibly due to the synthesis of different proteins, such as those related to cold stress response, at low temperatures. The quantity (RIA and LR) and quality (absolute number of peptides with incorporation and their function) must be considered to fully understand the activity of microbial communities.

Sorption fractionation of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on mineral surfaces and associated effects on phenanthrene sorption to EPS-mineral complexes

Summary: Microbial EPS are an important source of labile component in natural organic matter, and their sorption behavior to mineral surfaces can significantly affect the sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The type and surface properties of minerals, as well as the biological source of EPS, play key roles in sorption fractionation of EPS on minerals and ultimately impact the sorption affinity of apolar HOCs to EPS-mineral complexes.EPS-mineral complexes exhibited larger sorption coefficients than pristine EPS, indicating that sorptive interactions were facilitated by sorbed EPS on mineral surfaces.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of considering the dynamics of the total mobile inventory, including particulates >0.45 pm, in understanding carbon and elemental fluxes as well as nutrient cycles and subsurface ecosystem functioning. Seasonal and episodic dynamics of the total mobile inventory in undisturbed soil are influenced by atmospheric forcing, with episodic events like snow melts and rainstorms significantly contributing to the export of inorganic/organic matter beyond the subsoil-regolith boundary.

The mechanisms of gravity-constrained aggregation in natural colloidal suspensions

Summary: A comprehensive modeling study on the evolution of an aggregated three-dimensional structure due to diffusion, surface interactions, and gravity revealed three mechanisms of aggregation and showed how the balance of different interactions determines the rate of aggregation. The 3D visualization tool allowed tracking of subtle interplay of mechanisms and dynamic hierarchical self-assembly of aggregates.
